Symptoms and signs of coronavirus in babies –
We are still learning about the coronavirus and the illness (COVID-19) it causes. Research on kids and COVID-19 is in process.
So, scientists know that this corona-virus typically appears to make kids and babies less sick than it makes adults. Children and babies may also have different symptoms from adults.
Here’s a rundown on what we know so far on why most of the babies and childrens don’t seem to get as sick and how you can help protect or safe your little ones.
Symptoms and signs of coronavirus in babies and childrens
How common is covid in babies and kids?
As of summer 2021, there’s still a lot we don’t know about how common it is for babies to get coronavirus.
But we do know that childrens and babies of any age, including newborns, can get a Coronavirus.
.Findings reported in July 2020 said that children made up 8.5 percent of total people known to have this viral disease in 50 U.S. states, New York City, Washington, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
Fortunately, it does seem to be very uncommon for children to have illness due COVID-19.
According to the same report, data from 21 states and New York showed that of those children with COVID-19, 0.5 to 10% were hospitalized. And in an even larger data set, between 0 and 0.3% of known cases in children resulted in death.
What happens when a baby tests positive at time of birth?
The novel covid is still quite new, and scientists are learning more and more about it every week. Data current as of summer 2020 suggests that 2 to 6 percent of newborns babies test positive for COVID-19 within 24 to 96 hours of delivery if moms are positive as well.
We have few case studies on babies take birth with coronavirus (or positive within that 24- to 96-hour window — it’s not always clear whether they contract the coronavirus during birth.
In March 2020, doctors in China Trusted Source did look at the babies of 34women who had positive while they were pregnant. Out of these all babies, two newborns tested positive for COVID-19.
The studies outlined what happened before and after the babies were born.
All two babies were delivered by a cesarean because the mothers had COVID-19 symptoms, including pneumonia. All two babies developed symptoms, and one of them needed help breathing right after the birth.
By the time the babies were a week old, all two tested negative . But one from them did have complications another week.
So we have to be careful and safe about drawing conclusions. But from this medical study, here’s what we know might happen if a mother has positive of Coronavirus at delivery and her newborn baby tests positive for coronavirus shortly after birth:
- baby might needs care in the NICU
- babies may need to be separated from their moms — either due to mom’s illness or new born babies illness
- baby may get a chest X-ray for pneumonia
- they’ll get blood tests to check for more infections, blood clotting, and more
- they may get Tested for Coronavirus every 2-3 days (until baby is negative and has no signs of covid)
